On this adventure, we visit the Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel, located only 30 minutes from Reykjavík. After entering the cave, we learn the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while walking on lava flowed thousands of years ago. One of the biggest in Iceland, the lava tunnel is up to 30 meters wide and 10 meters high. The ceiling has caved in near the entrance, creating beautiful columns of light. The fantastic range of colors on the tunnel walls is caused by the minerals in different rock. As you walk around 350 meters into the lava tunnel, the temperature drops to around 4 degrees Celsius, although it can be warmer outside. Water leaks from the ceiling when it rains and snows, so we recommend raincoats.
